Hydroelectric power (also known as hydropower or hydro) was the first form of commercial electricity available in Canada in 1881.
By using the natural flow of water downhill, you can generate clean and renewable electricity that can be controlled to provide electricity when needed.
In 2022, Canada generated 9% of the world’s hydroelectricity. That’s the third-largest amount behind China (30%) and Brazil (10%)!
All hydropower systems rely on converting the kinetic energy (energy generated from motion) of flowing water into electricity by using turbines and generators. The more water that flows from a higher drop, the more electricity that can be generated.
